Fianna Fáil local election hopeful Lisa Chambers has this week hit out at the lack of facilities to help people rehabilitate themselves if they get caught up with drugs, and has called for increased education to be given to young people about drugs.

Kenny unveils plans for Sacred Heart Hospital

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the details of the €11 million overhaul of the Sacred Heart Hospital when he visited the hospital on Monday. The roll out of the investment into the hospital will quell fears that the hospital was being wound down. The design team for the project will be appointed this spring, with the tender process completed early next year, and it is planned the sod will be turned on the project by early summer 2015 and should be completed by late 2016 or early 2017. It was also confirmed that while the construction gets under way the hospital will remain open and accepting patients under its care.

Chambers claims delay on decision of pylon routes is purely political

Fianna Fáil Castlebar area representative Lisa Chambers has hit out at the decision to delay the route selection for the Eirgrid project until after the local and European elections as a political decision, rather than a practical one. The local elections hopeful said this week: "It’s clear that Fine Gael and Labour realise how politically sensitive the pylon issue is for people all over the country, and candidates for next May's elections are obviously worried about the impact the Eirgrid project will have on their campaigns."

Castlebar roundabouts are deadly for pedestrians and shoppers — Chambers

Castlebar is not a pedestrian friendly town and something needs to be done about the town's roundabouts, according to local Fianna Fail area rep, Lisa Chambers. "I was shopping around Tesco in Castlebar during the week and trying to navigate the roundabout to get to Boots was a nightmare," said Ms Chambers. She contined: "I noticed a mother with a pram and actually stopped to observe how she could cross the roundabout and it was with great difficulty. She almost had to use the pram as a traffic stopper. The speed with which cars are travelling though this roundabout is much too fast and traffic calming measures are needed.

Chambers meets MEPS in Brussels

Castlebar based Fianna Fáil vice-president and local area representative, Lisa Chambers, met with Fianna Fáil MEPs Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, Liam Aylward and Brian Crowley in Brussels on a recent trip. Lisa, who is chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Fianna Fáil National Executive, and three committee members were invited to Brussels to visit the Commission and the Parliament, and also to meet with the Fianna Fáil MEPs.

Goverment attacking working mothers — Chambers

Fianna Fáil local area representative for Castlebar, Lisa Chambers, has accused the Government of engaging in a targeted attack on working mothers. This week she raised the issue that €70 million has been taken from maternity benefit in the last two budgets, through a new tax on the benefit this year and a cut in weekly payments next year. She said, “Last year Fine Gael decided to tax maternity benefit for the first time in history. This tax kicked in in July and has resulted in thousands of mothers in Mayo losing up to €2,700 or €450 per month during their 26 weeks maternity leave.”
